Pettitte Still Key After All These Years

Andy Pettitte makes his return to the Postseason tonight for the first time since 2010.  Yankee fans will no doubt be thinking about his crucial 2009 playoff performance when he takes the mound; a dose of the same could be the key to New York's 28th world championship.  That may not be fair to put on a man who has only logged 75.1 innings this year, but Pettitte is a fearless warrior between the lines and would not have it any other way.

Mark Hale wrote an article today confirming what most of us had believed and hoped for: Andy is considering a return in 2013 and sounds very much like that's what he wants to do.  It'll be this winter before we know for sure, but re-signing Pettitte for another season is a big piece to the 2013 championship puzzle.  Thanks to the uncertainty surrounding Michael Pineda, New York is going into the offseason with only three of five rotation slots filled, and that's with Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova representing starters #2 and 3 (!).  They need a minimum of two free agents and Pertitte is the most ideal for the Yankees.  The perfect scenario would be to bring back Andy and Kuroda, which will put Hughes and Nova in the 4 and 5 slots where they belong and allow Pineda to play when he's ready.

Andy Pettitte's place in Yankee annals is cemented and what he means to its fanbase is beyond reproach.  No matter the outcome tonight, the chapter he's written in its history book is long and colorful, but it looks like he's not ready to put the pen down just yet.
